Elliott Carter: Collected Essays and Lectures, 1937-1995 (Eastman Studies in Music)

reflections of a great contemporary composer
For anyone interested in modern music, by whatever name (contemporary classical composition, "new music"), this book is invaluable. Elliott Carter, in my view one of the two best composers of the late 20th century, along with Gyorgy Ligeti, has written fairly extensively over the years about his music. He was actually employed as a critic for Modern Music in the late 1930s, one source of these essays. Presented here are trenchant analyses of the difficulty of being a composer of advanced works in a commercial society, including the problems of orchestras and rehearsals ("the orchestral brontosaur"), reflections on American and European music, reminiscences of his studies with Boulanger in Paris, explanations of various compositions including the First and Second string quartets and the Concerto for Orchestra, and fascinating comments on other composers, including of course Charles Ives, along with Stravinsky, Varese, the Second Vienna School, Debussy and Mozart. Carter expresses the utmost respect for Webern's exquisite miniatures, while making clear his rejection of serialism, which he never adopted.

Elliott Carter enjoys a much higher level of recognition in Europe than in the U.S., where composers of schlocky film scores are vastly more popular (ie, "Star Wars"). While noticed by only a few today, these writings will play a part in establishing Carter's future reputation as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century -- an American composer whether he was recognized by his contemporaries at home or not.

Elliott Carter: In Conversation With Enzo Restagno for Settembre Musica 1989 (I.S.A.M. Monographs, No 32)

superb interview with America's premier "classical" composer
This is a short ( 100 page ) but very interesting interview with Elliott Carter conducted by Enzo Restagno, an Italian professor of music. The interview(s) took place in the wake of a series of concerts in Turin (1989) celebrating Carter's (then) half century of active composing. As Carter is well known as a lively, witty conversationalist and Mr. Restagno poses sensitive and erudite questions, the interview provides telling insights into Carter's artistic conceptions ( not restricted to music ), his memories of many great musicians ( Ives, Varese, etc ) and his thoughts about contemporary music and its often misunderstood role in American culture ( Carter has received far more commissions in the last 20 years from European sources ). Highly recommended to long time "Carterians", this little volume should prove valuable to newcomers as well. This is a worthy successor to the unfortunately out of print "FLAWED WORDS AND STUBBORN SOUNDS", a series of interviews conducted by Allen Edwards c. 1969 and compares quite favorably with the equally sympathetic and insightful series of interviews with another genius of contemporary music, Iannis Xenakis ( "CONVERSATIONS WITH XENAKIS" by Balint-Vargas ). These are books that connect with the interested "common listener" and avoid the type of musicological analysis more appropriate to the academy and advanced professionals.

Story about enchanted India
The plot, the strong characters and the beautiful description of the enchanted India enthralled me. I absolutely loved all the characters. I read this book almost a year ago, but every character is still fresh in my memory and in my heart. I was touched by the gentle feelings between Tanya and Adam. I totally believe that this story can be true, because real love often does not come with the fervent sexual desires and overwhelming passions in the beginning, but it grows gradually stronger with caring about each other, sharing good and bad times and learning to value real feelings over the moments of uncontrollable passion.

The Emergency Stand-By Date (Yours Truly)
Published in Paperback by Silhouette (March, 1998)
Author: Samantha Carter
Average review score:

Stand-by is a stand-out
Samantha Carter writes about the tribulations of being single in a world where "buy one, get one free" is the norm. This is a fast paced read with a very contemporary feel. Jenny Forrest and Ken Parks rocket from one social date to another and neither is able to figure out how to make the transition from emergency stand-by to the real thing.

No babies, no cowboys, and no runaway brides. But Carter still tells a fascinating story about two people who are right for each other, even though neither of them is willing to believe it.

Way to go, Samantha Carter.
